sports climbing
today we(about half of ODAC) went to some rock wall in bukit batok for sports climbing. rock climbing really rocks. at first i managed to climb to the top twice at 2 different sections and felt quite accomplished. then on to the 3rd section to attempt. at first look it didn't look very hard as apart from a small hump at around the 3rd panel, the rest of it looked quite easy.so i started climbing, then i was like wtf? i was stuck at the 2nd and 3rd panel cause of the stupid hump, and there was this missing handhold which i assumed would have been crucial for me to get up. after alot of encourage from the ppl below (thanks guys! =]) and numerous tries, i finally managed to get onto the 4th panel. quite a lot of handholds were quite crappy, with very little to grab onto, or roundish and hard to even put your fingers on it, but the rest of the handholds rocks (literally, rocks up and down, in and out when you hold on to them). so that wall was pretty hard to climb and took quite a lot out of me. unsurprisingly, i was dying at the 7th panel and eventually gave up, ending only at 7th panel after a grueling 15mins =(. but i wasn't that disappointed, since it was a pretty tough section, and i was already quite tired from the previous 2 climbs.
then gayle at the belay station next to mine started climbing. she took more or less then same route i took. the difference was that she got to the top in less than 5 mins!! everyone was like O_O guess we should start saying "gone with the gale" instead (cold laugh)
then on the way to the mrt, we passed by a vending machine to buy some drinks, since everyone was thirsty and most had already finished their water. then gerald tay decided to try the "dial-a-coke" function on the vending machine which basically required you to send an sms to their service number and the machine is supposed to give you a drink and the money will be charged to your phone bill. after calling and waiting for a long while nothing happened, so we guessed the feature wasn't working and left. after walking about 200m away, gerald suddenly received an sms that went somewhere along the lines of "thank you for your purchase" and he rushed back to the machine for his drink. only to realise it wasn't there. it was a pretty sad case for him, but probably a happy case for the person who was standing there when the machine vended the drink (assuming the service isn't just a fake for cheating ppl of their money).
anyway the whole experience was very fun, though i got a few scratches here and there. can't wait for the next rock climbing session!
