A chain is as strong as its weakest link

even though the title doesn't look like it, but this post is about chain emails. received this email just about a dozen times from different ppl.

hey everyone, i had a look on the internet and its actually true . On the1st
of november , we will have to pay for the use of our MSN and emailaccounts
unless we send this message to at least 18 contacts on your contactlist.
It's no joke if you don't believe me then go to the
site(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1189119.stm ) and see for
yourself.Anyways once you've sent this message to at least 18 contacts, your
msn dudewill become blue. please copy and paste don't forward cos people
won't takenotice of it.Hey it is Andy and john the directors of MSN, sorry
for the interruption butmsn is closing down. this is because too many
inconsideratepeople are taking up all the name (eg making up lots?of
different accountsfor just one person), we only have 578 names left. If you
would like toclose your account, DO NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE ON. If you would
like to keepyour account, then SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT
LIST. Thisis no joke, we will be shutting down the servers. Send it on,
thanks. WHOEVER DOES NOT SEND THIS MESSEAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE CLOSED AND
YOU WILLCOST 10.00 A MONTH TO USE. SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT
LIST. NOWYOU KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS or REPLAY. COPY THE
WHOLEEMAIL. GO BACK TO YOUR INBOX AND CLICK ON NEW. AND PASTE

this is just one of the thousands of other variants out there. this is where your ss skills comes into play. first, reliability, to see how reliable it is, first you look at the source. its probably your friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend's friend who received it from some random anonymous email like ChainLetterVer1083.4.5@email.hoax

then next you analyse its content, the msn dude is ALWAYS blue (for me at least), cause thats whether you're online on msn messenger

and, if msn actually tracks the content of your emails, will anyone still be using it?

And_If_Msn_Allows_You_To_Use_Any_Possible_Combination_Of_
Numbers_And_Letters_And_Underscores_You_Can_Possibly_Imagine
_Or_Not_Imagine@hotmail.com, what makes you think they will ever run of of account names? mathematically, if they allow account names up to 20 letters, they have just about (26+10+3)^20, which is like 66,266,211,231,824,447,117,620,880,943,201. even if everyone on earth created like 50 million accounts, theres definitely more than 578 names left. it would have been more believable if they said msn is running out of server space, only that msn is owned by microsoft, which probably as much money as the combinations of email names you can use.

next you analyse the sources quoted. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1189119.stm if you havent gone to it yet, pls go there and read no further than the heading. now tell me the year we are living in. if msn wanted to charge us 5 years ago, why havent they already done so? then you read on: Microsoft is reportedly planning to start charging surfers for the improved services of its MSN internet portal. not very sure if they are doing so now.

aaaaaaaand, with google and yahoo mail so competitive, msn wouldn't kill itself by driving away its products (yes you are products sold by msn)

so lesson of the day, don't trust any tom dick or harry email you receive unless it has the msn sign on the envelop icon which means its official from msn! (when that day comes, hello yahoo messenger!) and do check your stuff carefully before you happily send them off to other ppl.
